AUUDI DORSEY
At age 12 Auudi’s found himself in the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina, besides the enormous loss of lives, lively hoods, there was the loss of imagery. All the photo albums and its memories had washed away. As most people left their homes to rebuild elsewhere, Auudi felt the need to commemorate his narrative and that of his community in New Orleans. Though his life has been filled with loss, through it all he has found his voice within his community.
The paintings are depictions of figures surrounded by planes of colors, and combinations of tones that resonate in the streets of New Orleans. The solemn figures have their narrative carved into their faces and ligaments, with a weight of happiness, angst and life staring at the viewer - It is a stare we cannot hide from.
“I want to define the layers of black lives in New Orleans and how adversity can be turned into an opportunity.” Auudi Dorsey
