Empirical Nonsense

ELISE FERGUSON

My work is a series of reflections on interior space, abstraction and the flexible nature of perception.  Continually referring to the creation and/or definition of space, the patterns and color choices encourage a fluidity and movement within all my work. Demonstrating a sensuous enjoyment of materials, much my work is process oriented in which form and surface play a primary role.

My sculptural works - frequently hinged and movable - situate somewhere between sculptural objects and a quasi-architectural entity.  Through the use of cut slots in the wood and mirrors, they encourage the viewer to simultaneously perceive the piece of art and the space it inhabits. Stemming from an interest in public spaces, such as atriums, lobbies and corporate environments, where the demands of the space frequently change, my intention to create works that encourages flow and movement.

In addition to my interests in perception and spatial transformation, my studio practice is also very “process” oriented.   My current paintings - reflecting this approach - are created from plaster, inlayed metal, and silver leaf and have carved and scribed surfaces. These physical, process driven works are based on mathematical puzzles and geometric variation.  Each piece is a search for a perfect point of transition – a portal.  And because this is never achieved, each failure leads to the next work – another attempt to solve the unsolvable problem.
