FLEUR PIERETS . Canceled

In 2017, female artist couple Fleur and Julian started 22–The Project, a performance art piece in which the couple would marry in every country that legalized same-sex marriage. There were 22 countries when they launched the project in 2017; since then, the number of countries has grown to 28. Fleur and Julian married in New York, Amsterdam, Antwerp and Paris. After the 4th. wedding Julian was diagnosed with brain cancer. She died on January 22, 2018.

“Canceled” is one of the three series Fleur made after her wife’s death. Their wedding performance had a worldwide following and was broadcasted and featured in every country. By blowing up 12 newspaper articles, varying from Poland to US, Italy and The Netherlands, Fleur shows that a story of hope and love got canceled by life itself.

Fleur Pierets is an award-winning Belgian artist, writer, speaker and LGBTQ+ activist who’s work combines photography and performance with theory and writing in a research-based practice that questions the construction and mainstream understanding of (gay) identity. Together with her wife, Julian P. Boom she founded Et Alors?, an online magazine and research platform where they publish their conversations with queer musicians, visual artists, writers and performers by whom they are inspired, hereby capturing the zeitgeist of a world in the midst of its striving for change and it’s cultural awareness when it comes to LGBTQ representation in art history.

Fleur wrote a book called ‘Julian’. Published in September 2019 at Das Mag (Amsterdam). And a children’s book called ‘Love Around the World’ which was published in November 2019 at 6ft.Press (US). www.etalorsmagazine.com
