Essential themes throughout Maureen Bachaus’ work are the human psyche and the human identity. She translates human thoughts into photography projects, performances, video- or multimedia projects, and installations. Many of her art video’s, ‘Happiness’ included, are based upon authentic interviews and diaries.

A universal and symbolic portrait, based upon human thoughts.

Maureen Bachaus interviewed former residents of the Balkan area who left their home during the war in order to build up a new life in Western Europe. The subject of the interviews has been their thoughts and emotions about themselves and their identity, in relation to the past. The text in the videos finds its origin in these authentic interviews.

Maureen Bachaus is the creative mind behind many cultural, curatorial and conceptual art projects throughout Europe. Maureen works as cultural policy advisor in Eijsden-Margraten (The Netherlands) and as a conceptual artist. She is also co-founder of the international art collective >BAUM< in cooperation with her partner Jeton Muja (Kosovo/NL). She translates human thoughts into photography projects, performances, video - or multimedia projects, installations and sculptures. A frequently used material is rope, sometimes pierced roughly through the image, which symbolizes the limitation or even captivity but also the freedom experienced by personal thoughts and feelings.
