DIETMAR BUSSE . Today I wanted to die again (1)

Accidents in paradise #1, 2019,

Mixed media on silver gelatin photographic paper

42”x52"

After working in analogue photography for some thirty years, Busse has shed the camera and the negative and instead utilizes the chemicals and paper from his darkroom, to conjure a very personal history of childhood, of innocence, of fairytales gone very wrong in all of it’s terror and beauty.

On a flat plane: a farmhouse, a field, the sky, pigs fornicating, cars, tanks and guns, a black bodied bird high in the sky, pretty horses, delicate butterflies, liquor bottles, humans in distress.

Busse’s chemical gesture of figurative painting on photographic paper subverts and liberates the limitations of the camera’s eye and allows a more intuitive, magical, even slippery documentation of self.
