THÉO MERCIER
Flashbacks from the earlier work by Théo Mercier.
Théo Mercier was born in 1984 in Paris, France. He lives and works in Paris and Mexico. He is a French sculptor, painter and photographer and one of the strongest artists to have emerged from France in many years. Vogue described his work as drawing "on a surreal and dreamlike imaginarium populated by singular, mysterious and often monstrous creatures."
Mercier works on the edge of borders between good and bad, dark and light, attraction and repulsion to leave a constant question mark. There is a real sense of whimsicality about his process, which keeps his sculptures spontaneous. Dealing with today’s environment and the danger of extinction, his work constantly refers to metamorphosis and mutation.
Through black humor the artist translates his message into art. His surrealistic sculptures, transport the viewer into a world of the unreal. Nothing is sacred in the artist's creative process. The ingredients in his phenomenal sculptures can be sculls, feathers, plastic fruit and vegetables, mousetraps or dildos. One could suspect an almost restless quest to see if there is anything that could not be used in the next piece of art. Théo Mercier's sculptures are accumulations, or more precisely collections, that transmit the ironic magic of simple things revealing the aura living inside of them.
