ERIK HANSON

Painting is a great way for me to work through internal conflict. Like most, the struggles that I endure are largely self made, but very real. Painting is a way for me of learning how to get out of my own way.

Erik Hanson was born in Tokyo Japan in 1959 works in a variety of mediums and is largely self taught. His first solo shows , in 1977 and 1979 consisted of photographs then he started to work in drawing, sculpture and needlepoint as ways to record ephemeral experience. His solo shows include Derek Eller, 11 Rivington and Marlborough in NYC, and Rock-it in Minneapolis and he has been included in group shows at American Fine Arts and MoMA/PS1. In 2006 he was awarded a residency at Cite des Artes in Paris where he taught himself how to paint.
