Turd Wave Feminist Furlesque

TurdWaveFem.jpeg

The Turd Wave Feminist Furlesque will embrace the aspects of the queer, female and gnc body that society deems inappropriate. Performances will question the pervading demand to view a polished version of our bodies that denies the fact that we have ACTUAL bodies that piss, shit, bleed, sweat, have hair and operate beyond the gender binary. Curated by Stephanie Guedalia.

Closing Performances: Stanley Love Performance Group, Helixx C Armageddon, and Jorge Clar

For the Closing of SCOOTER LAFORGE and NICOLAS WAGNER exhibitions, Empirical Nonsense is pleased to present new performances by STANLEY LOVE PERFORMANCE GROUP, HELIXX C ARMAGEDDON, and JORGE CLAR. Curated by Scooter LaForge and with a deep love and commitment we share this visionary creative community with you.

“We are human first, dancers second” – says choreographer/dancer Stanley Love and this universal declaration seems to be the key to reading his work produced with the Stanley Love Performance Group. Active on the NYC dance scene for almost 26 years, Love has made his mark as a driving force behind large-scale dances involving large casts and extremely dense, energetic movement, drawing from various social and modern dance idioms and coordinated in perfect unison to a truly orchestral effect. However, while most of the contemporary choreographers working with large ensembles invest in uniformity of look and movement, Love sees value in the individuality of each of his dancers and builds his ensemble as an embodiment of the underlying principle of diversity, both of culture and body types. While his pieces are highly structured and choreographed in minute details, the performers contribute to them not only by their brilliant technique and perfect sense of the rhythm – necessary to execute each of the wildly dynamic “sections” that Love’s work is built upon – but also uniqueness of their stage presence, emotion and spirit.

Helixx C. Armageddon is a performance artist, lyricist, poet, and music producer. She is a founding member of The Anomolies, a gender justice hip-hop collective, formed in 1995. Helixx has performed in notable venues around New York City including Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Bowery Poetry Club, Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre, Hammerstein Ballroom, Gene Frankel Theatre, Howl! Happening and the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art. Currently, she is working on an experimental spoken word album and is based in the East Village.

Jorge Clar is a multidisciplinary artist, poet, and editor. He is a part of the performance troupe Karload of Klowns, a mainstay of the Gene Frankel Theatre on Bond Street. Recent performances include Erasing the Dictionary and PataCircus at the Gene Frankel, and Prismatic at Ivy Brown Gallery. Clar curated the performance and poetry review Monster Salon for Howl! Happening and has performed within art shows by Angelica Bergamini, Kelly Bugden + Van Wifvat, Joel Handorff, Scooter LaForge, and more.

PXALM-empirical noise show image.jpg

NYOBS is Mike Cacciatore, Peter Cramer, John Michael Swartz and Jack Waters. An alternative experimental free association “kitchen“ band born at Punk Island 2014. From trance lyrics to primal screams, NYOBS pierces the restive soul with mind-blowing inducements of tonal & aural synth-esthesia. Recent performances include opening for 3 Teen Kill 4 at BWAC and a special musical tribute to the writings of David Wojnarowicz at the Whitney Museum.

PXALM: Angel Favorite, Maureen Catbagan, and L. Favorite are non-binary/gender-fluid, Brooklyn-based multi-media artists whose music is part existential, post-punk, and dark romantic. They have a curiosity towards exploring different forms of spirituality and expanding individual and social consciousness through sound.
